About us
We are an Independent Methodist Episcopal Church started by freed slaves in 1868 in Sykesville, Maryland, and our congregation includes descendants of those courageous people. Our credo is “To love first of all and serve best of all,” and we certainly live up to that by hosting and supporting various community events.
Reverend Douglas B. Sands led our congregation for many years with determination and conviction that we are all sent to do God’s work here on Earth. His life has been one of service not only to the Church and its people, but also to his country. He is a fine example of “Servant Leadership,” and works diligently to help others in that same role.
Recently, the torch has been transferred to Reverend Ernest Thomas, Sr a long time friend and fellow member of the Preacher's Hall of Fame. Reverend Thomas formerly taught the Gospel at several churches, and is currently a partner with numerous community endeavors.
White Rock Independent Methodist Episcopal Church is more than an old building. Our members have food and clothing drives for the needy, have summertime BBQs, take community trips, provide Communion services for those unable to make it to church, and so much more.
But we need your help to fight “against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” We really need and value your prayers and support!
The days of old are quickly fading away. Please help us memorialize our experiences at White Rock by messaging your personal experiences and memories of White Rock to be compiled into a memoir we can save for generations to come!
If you're not able to do this through Facebook or email, please call 410-795-1110 to advise a good time to sit down and talk. Also, if you know of anyone whose story needs to be told, please let us know.
Our story is the foundation on which our hope and faith lies. As Reverend Sands said, the original deed holders had "Christ confidence" and so do we.
